Full methodology
Capital + Tech
● OFFICIAL SOURCE
Federal + Shopify

The federal government is the largest employer (140k civil servants in the region), but tech is growing fast: Shopify (HQ), Kinaxis, Ciena, Mitel. Public-service stability + startup dynamism. Unemployment at 5.0%, one of the lowest in Canada.

Truly bilingual
● OFFICIAL SOURCE
FR / EN

40% of the population speaks French. Federal services are bilingual by law. Order coffee in your language, work in English, then cross the bridge to Gatineau in French, all in one day. Language immersion without moving to Montreal.

Mid-range cost
● OFFICIAL SOURCE

Rent 25% cheaper than Toronto, 30% cheaper than Vancouver. Federal salaries are uniform nationwide, in Ottawa, the same salary buys more. More family per square metre than in any other provincial capital.

Montreal-style winter
● OFFICIAL SOURCE

January averages -10°C with -18°C wind chill. The Rideau Canal becomes the world's longest skating rink (7.8km). The LRT runs normally, but winter is a real adjustment factor, comparable to Montreal.

If I had to pick one neighbourhood…

For newcomers arriving in Ottawa, ON, I'd point to LeBreton Flats.

  • It's the liveliest neighbourhood in Ottawa.

Wellington Street West has the best coffee in the city, independent brewpubs, art galleries and the Parkdale Market. It's not the sanitised downtown of Centretown nor the suburban family Westboro, it's Ottawa with a real-city feel.

  • Custo-benefício imbatível.

Rent around CAD $1,700 for a 1BR, 15% below the central median. Westboro and Centretown cost CAD $1,950-2,100 for the same apartment.

  • LRT Bayview na esquina.

A 10-minute walk to Bayview Station (Confederation Line + Trillium Line intersection). You're 12 minutes from Parliament Hill, 25 minutes from the airport via O-Train Line 2, no car needed.

  • Rising community.

Hintonburg gentrified over the last decade without losing its soul. You'll find Algonquin students, young federal civil servants, Shopify creatives and multicultural families. This is the real Ottawa.
