How to read these numbers
- Statistics Canada computes the Crime Severity Index (CSI) from every police-reported crime. More serious crimes carry more weight.
- A value of 100 equals Canada in 2006. A value below the national average points to a relatively calmer area.
- Small towns can swing a lot from one year to the next: a handful of cases moves the index. Look at the multi-year trend, not a single number.
